December is the time of year when many people put their job search on hold and wind down in preparation for the festive season. However, a survey by the online executive career network ExecuNet stated that 69% of recruiters report placing as many, or more candidates in December compared to other months.
The advice of 94% of the 500 hiring managers surveyed by Accounting Principals is that job-seekers should keep up their search right through to the end of the year. If you wait until January, you will face one of the toughest and most competitive months of the year.
Here are 7 reasons why you should continue your job search in December.
1. Time
Workloads ease off in December which means that you will have time to think about your next job and what direction you want your career to go. You should take some time to update and refresh your CV and look on job boards for your perfect job.
2. Attention from recruiters
Not only will your workload ease off in December, but recruiter's workloads will also ease off because of a decline in the number of people applying for jobs. Therefore, recruiters will be able to allocate more time to your application, in terms of looking over your CV, speaking with you and being more attentive overall.
3. Budgets
It is not uncommon for companies to have some money left over in their budget at the end of the year. As a result, managers will have the incentive to fill job openings by the end of December. Also, companies may be willing to offer more to a candidate starting in December instead of January.
4. Increase in contracting opportunities
There is alot of contract work available in November/December, so it is the perfect time for contractors to seek out these opportunities. Also, the additional income will be beneficial over the festive period.
5. Networking opportunities
December is the season for networking, from office parties to community gatherings and dinner with friends, there’s no shortage of events to network with others. This may be the perfect opportunity to let people know what your career plans are and make people aware that you are on the hunt for your next job.
6. Less competition
Many people put the job-hunting process on hold at this time of the year so there will be less competition when applying for jobs and therefore a higher chance of securing a job.
7. Time to settle in
Starting a new company can be a daunting time. However, December normally brings a more relaxed environment which is a great time to get to know your work colleagues.
Also, performance expectations may not be as high in December which allows you to settle in and familiarise yourself with your job.
